Figure Skating Gets Back on Track
International Figure Skating
SKATING INTO SHOW BUSINESS • The Adam Rippon show reached a new crescendo with his joyful waltz through the Olympic Winter Games in 2018. But, as it turned out, it was far from being the closing act for the poster boy of those Games, even though it represented the finish line of a competitive figure skating career that had spanned almost two decades.
Fast Track To The Top • In pairs skating, success most often comes with longevity. It can take years for a team to reach the top echelons of the discipline, but Russia’s Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii found early success, climbing the global pairs ladder at a record pace. The St. Petersburg duo stormed to the top of the European podium in just their second season on the senior circuit, serving notice they will be strong contenders for a step on the podium in Beijing.
Titles & Medals Do Not Define a Career • The final competitive season was a series of highs and lows for Canada’s Elladj Baldé. Concussions and a back injury hampered him every step of the way in the second half of 2017. While many would have thrown in the towel and called it a day, his perseverance paid off with the program of a lifetime in his final appearance at the Canadian Championships. And, despite never winning a national medal or major international title, Baldé moved on to a successful professional career and now performs for audiences around the globe.
HONORING THE BEST • The ISU Skating Awards gala, one of the major events planned by Skate Canada and the International Skating Union (ISU) for the 2020 World Championships in Montréal, was slated to play out on the final day of the event. Organizers had been working on the glitz and glamour affair for months, with the awards ceremony scheduled to take place in front of a sold-out audience. The ISU had elegant trophies designed for the winners and current and former stars of the sport were set to perform on ice.
